Photographer's Picks

Most people look at a photograph as a visual record of time. An artist that uses photography as his or her medium will use that frozen moment of time to convey a certain message. The use of colors, composition and depth are all considered when the photographer chooses to make a picture rather than take a picture.

Colors can have a powerful impact when used properly. Warm tones can make it more intense where cool tones more empty - essentially the polar opposites: hot vs. cold.

Native Image 1 The Boxer was intended to be used for a public service announcement "Domestic Violence-This Could Be You".

The bluish tones and the symmetrical composition were intended to convey emptiness, pain, and loneliness.

Composition can be something as simple as vertical vs. horizontal, which can strongly affect the overall feeling to an image. Horizontal is more peaceful or calming compared to vertical, which is power and intense, on edge.

Native Image 2 The image of "Heroes"; was to honor the undaunted firefighter facing all obstacles to save a life. Bravery beyond the average man's comprehension.

Depth is a tool that can be used effectively to keep the viewer in the photograph a little longer.

If accomplished correctly, this extra time equates to more information being communicated about the photograph.

Native Image 3 In this self-portrait the photographer represented himself with personal items photographed within a specific scene.

With the help of a mannequin walking away from the camera, and the optimum path leading into infinity, the image intent was to convey a positive, determined, and adventurous personality behind the photograph.

These small considerations when taking pictures are the difference between a snap shot and a story.
